The "water purifier" of the river
"Xiaolangdi Water Control Project is a key control project for the Yellow River regulation and development. It controls 92% of the basin area, 91% of the runoff and nearly 100% of the sediment of the Yellow River, focusing on flood control, ice prevention and siltation reduction, taking into account the functions of water supply, irrigation and power generation. " Li Peng, director of the Water Dispatching Division of Xiaolangdi Water Control Center, told reporters.
Since 2002, Xiaolangdi Water Conservancy Project, by regulating the reservoir discharge, has washed out the silted sediment in the Yellow River channel and reservoir in time, reduced the siltation in the reservoir area and riverbed, and stopped the suspended river from rising, greatly increased the flood discharge capacity of the main channel of the Yellow River and built the "water purifier" of the Yellow River.
Xiaolangdi Project resisted the "Autumn Flood in West China" in 2003, many autumn floods in the middle reaches of the Yellow River, flood in the whole flood season, and effectively responded to the biggest flood since the founding of New China in 2021.

The "scale" of the river

By forecasting the flood water quantity and combining with the downstream river flow, the control water quantity is adjusted in real time, and the interception and release are carried out in strict accordance with the demand. "If there is too much water control, the downstream will be cut off; Too little will cause floods, "Li Peng added. In this process, when Xiaolangdi Reservoir releases the flow every 4,000 to 5,000 cubic meters as the normal state, at the same time, the adjustment accuracy needs to be controlled at 50 cubic meters, which plays the role of "scale" for accurately regulating the water quantity.
Xiaolangdi Water Control Project adopts scientific water management methods such as "peak-shifting operation" and "flood-blocking operation" to basically ensure the uninterrupted flow of water in the lower reaches of the Yellow River and effectively improve the water supply and ecological environment in the middle and lower reaches. "scientifically store water in the wet season and discharge it as needed in the dry season to meet the agricultural, industrial and ecological water use in the lower reaches of the Yellow River." Li Peng said. At present, Xiaolangdi Reservoir has realized the diversion of water from the Yellow River to Tianjin, from the Yellow River to Qingdao and from Huang Ji Lake by regulating water storage capacity, which has improved the water quality and ecological security of the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River, such as Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.

The "ecological valve" of the great river
"When the weather is fine, you can see a large green plain landscape in the lower reaches of the Yellow River." Li Peng has worked with emotion for more than 20 years, witnessing the ecological changes in Heluo Basin of the Yellow River. After the Xiaolangdi Reservoir was impounded, the vast water surface and green mountains formed in the upstream of the dam gave a panoramic view of the beautiful scenery of the Yellow River. The river flows out of the dam and into the beach, forming a wetland, widening the waterway and slowing down the flow rate, creating a holy place for birds to live. At present, there are 206 species of wetland birds in Xiaolangdi Wetland Reserve of the Yellow River, including 10 species of national first-class protected animals such as Hei He, stork and golden eagle, and 36 species of national second-class protected wild animals such as egret and swan.
